New St Michael's Sailing Club Launched with Success!             NEWS  Oct 27th  2010

The new St Michael's sailing club was launched during half term when a small group of students and teachers set sail out of Fowey  on Drascombe Longboat Piccolo.  Mr Sykes an advanced sailing instructor and Skipper Mr Anderson both worked as a team to give the students an excellent introduction to day sailing.

The 22' yacht Piccolo handled brilliantly, rising perfectly above a moderate swell in a gentle force 2-3 and all four crew took it in turns on the helm (except for John who was concentrating on feeling well) during the 4 hour coastal cruise from Fowey along the coast past Lantic bay and back.

On return a picnic lunch was enjoyed on Polruan Quay when the finer points of how to row a 22' Drascombe was explained.  The students were then given the challenging task to row the boat over to Fowey- this was achieved in slightly unorthodox fashion with a new pushme-pullme method developed by Mary and Anna.

Students were instructed throughout the day and had a thoroughly good time and a great deal was learnt by all.

The overwhelming success of the inaugoral sailing trip was very encouraging and the aim is to ensure all present and future students at St Michael's will have the opportunity to learn to sail and crew and the basics of navigation.  Learning to sail responsibly and safely is such a key skill particularly in this wonderful part of the world.
